Picking the Perfect T-shirt

By Picking the Perfect T-shirt

T-shirts are an important part of almost everyone's wardrobe. They are a comfortable and inexpensive garment to be worn alone or they can be versatile and layered with other types of clothing. T-shirts can add a great amount of variation to any wardrobe whether they are plain, stylish, or convey a witty message.

Many people think that a t-shirt is just a t-shirt; that they are all alike and in order to pick the perfect shirt all you have to do is find a color, picture, or saying that you like. All t-shirts are not the same, however, and picking the perfect one for you takes more consideration than just color and finding a witty saying.

The standard t-shirt is a boxy garment, cut to be comfortable but not very flattering on many types of frames. If you are looking for the perfect t-shirt, you should consider your body shape and pick a t-shirt that is both flattering and comfortable. Truth be told, most men have it easy when picking t-shirts, the classic boxy look is usually fine for them as tailoring and fancy necklines have a much more feminine appeal. However, a woman's body can benefit from some of these subtle variations in the boxy style so keep in mind your, or your intended recipient's, body style when picking the perfect t-shirt.

Many different t-shirt styles have evolved, and one of the main components that has changed is the neckline. A V style neck line works well for women with a shorter neck or large chest as it elongates the neck and draws the eye down. Neck lines that are too high will make the neck look shorter and make the chest appear too low. Women with broad shoulders should avoid t-shirts with wide necklines, although they work well to accentuate women with smaller chests.

T-shirts also vary in length, a more recent development that changes with the latest fashion trends. T-shirts that sit right at or above the hip are usually the most flattering. T-shirts that are too long make the lower body and legs look shorter. Sleeve length also varies by style and season from spaghetti straps to long sleeves. A three-quarter sleeve is a good pick for almost every body type. If you want to elongate your arms a cap sleeve will work while a traditional sleeve cut may make your frame look boxy or cut off.

Of course, color, image, and sayings should all be taken into account when shopping for the perfect t-shirt. These are normally more of a personal preference although some colors do not flatter certain complexions, for example black will wash out the face of someone with a very light skin tone.

Since t-shirts have come along way from their generic boxy origins, it is possible to find a great fitted t-shirt that flatters your body without being too tight or too loose. Above all, t-shirts are supposed to be comfortable so look for one that accentuates your curves without sticking uncomfortable to your body. It is possible to find an all cotton t-shirt that drapes beautifully without spandex or Lycra that will inevitably find flaws in any body type.
